We’re excited to be working in partnership with Trout Canada Unlimited Canada to bring our community outdoors and learn more about the conservation efforts of TUC and how it helps restore and rehabilitate the watershed in Alberta.
This is an amazing opportunity to engage with Conservationists, learn about their efforts, and how to be a part of the change. If you’re interested in learning more about conservation efforts and spending a day on the field doing hands-on restorative work with the Colour the Trails community, then this event is for you!
We believe in giving back, learning, connecting, and exploring opportunities in outdoor and conservation areas.
We will join Trout Unlimited Canada (TUC) to walk Fish Creek to count and document Brown Trout redds (nests). These fish are a great indicator of the stream health, as they require cool, clean and connected watersheds to survive. By counting and mapping the number and distribution of redds, we can answer questions about trout populations and spawning habitat in Fish Creek Provincial Park.
Participants will be led by a staff member or lead volunteer directing the survey. After meeting at the Bow Valley Ranch, groups will travel to one of locations within Fish Creek Provincial Park to begin their inventory (Hull’s Wood, Parkland, Glennfield and Shannon Terrace). Between TUC and FoFC, we should have at least 3 cars to drive groups out to each of the starting points, but if there are a few more people driving who can carpool and drive groups out to some of the starting points, that would be amazing.
Additional volunteers from Tsuut’ina and the Upper Fish Creek Watershed Association will support efforts upstream of the park, helping collect as much data as possible in the watershed. But it will just be our group within Fish Creek Provincial Park.
After the survey we will have a picnic and bonfire in Hull’s Woods.

In some cases when we pre-pay for spots with our hosts, we might need to fill in the spot in order to issue a refund.

- Refund: Cancellations made less than 7 days of the event will not be eligible for a refund.

FAQ
Who are Trout Unlimited Canada? Is this a fishing expedition?
This is not a fishing expedition! Trout Unlimited Canada is committed to tackling the pressing challenges facing our nation’s rivers, lakes, and wetlands through a variety of innovative programs and initiatives.
They have been working for over 50 years to conserve, protect, and restore Canada’s freshwater ecosystems and their coldwater resources for current and future generations.
What’s the likelihood that I encounter fish and other wildlife?
We won’t be handling fish at all as part of this project, just counting fish nests (redds), beaver dams, and recreational rock dams.
Why are we doing this?
Trout are gravel nest spawners, with female trout and salmon excavating a nest, called a redd, where they deposit eggs. These are fertilized by one or more male trout or salmon, then covered by gravel. As different trout species spawn at different times, we count the number of rainbow trout redds every May, and the number of brown trout redds every November. At the same time, we map beaver dams and recreational rock dams to examine their interaction with spawning.
Why is this conservation work important?
By counting and mapping the number and distribution of redds, we can answer questions about trout populations and spawning habitat in Fish Creek Provincial Park. Trout are indicator species for healthy streams, as they require cool, clean and connected watersheds to survive.
Do I need any gear or experience?
No, this event is beginner friendly. Wear practical clothing for being outside (see event description), and any additional needed supplies will be provided by Friends of Fish Creek.
Just bring yourself, a positive attitude, and get ready to do some hands-on learning with the rest of the CTT community!
