Event Details

We love our allies, but we ask to allow BIPOC folks only to register for now. If there are spots left, we will consider opening the course to allies.

Our ongoing effort is to support community members in learning and staying safe in activities of their choice. We will be running backcountry skiing and splitboarding days in Whistler later in the season. In order to help folks to prepare for that we are running an AST 1+ course. The group will be hosted by our partner Extremely Canadian. The event is sponsored by Columbia Sportswear which helps us to cover administrative costs and lower the prices of the events.

Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 course (AST 1+) provides an entry-level decision-making framework for recreational skiers and snowboarders in winter backcountry avalanche terrain. This comprehensive 2.5 day program is a blend of practical field days with indoor theory and review based on the curriculum as established by Avalanche Canada.

Field days will be Jan 14 and 15 with both starting at 8am.

While we can try to connect those registered for carpool possibility and usually folks find a ride, you need to be ready to get to Whistler by yourself.

Please note this course requires touring skis or splitboard, skins & avalanche safety gear. If you require safety gear (shovel, probe, beacon) Colour the Trails might provide you with a kit at no additional cost. If you need backcountry gear rentals please reach out to Extremely Canadian to enquire about a discount.

Also the field days require Whistler Blackcomb resort day passes. If you do not have a season pass, Extremely Canadian offers discounted lift tickets (backcountry-specific day passes are much cheaper than full-day resort access). We recommend getting a backcountry day pass instead of using a day of your Epic pass.

For touring ski or splitboard rental prices and day passes prices please reach out to Extremely Canadian at [email protected] or call 604-938-9656

For safety kit rental once registered by email – [email protected]
