FAQ
How athletic do I need to be?
Intro is geared towards total beginners. You don’t need to be super experienced at being on the water or paddling. You will be spending time listening to the instructor, learning technique, and then applying it.
For the complete series, you will want to feel comfortable doing a couple hours of paddling at a time, with breaks for snacks, lunch etc. for the last session, which is a day trip.
.
Do I need to know how to swim?
You do not need to know how to swim, but you must be comfortable falling in the water and keeping calm with a life jacket on.
Will I get wet?
At least part of you will get wet in the introduction to kayaking event. You will definitely be getting wet in the Complete Series as you will be learning water exits (kayak capsizing and re-entry).
What is a water exit?
During the complete series, the wet exit or water exit involves flipping in your kayak, and exiting (with supervision). You will be supported by your personal flotation device and will float to the surface but if this is something you are concerned about please reach out with any questions to [email protected]. This is a challenge by choice program so you may decline to do so, but you will not be eligible for the Level 1 certification.
Will I be provided with all of the gear I need?
You will be provided with: a wetsuit, a life jacket, 15m rope, bilge pump, whistle, paddle float, paddle, and a kayak, of course!
Items to wear/bring with you: a swimsuit, footwear that can get wet, a towel, sunscreen, a hat, a water bottle, and a change of clothes
.
Is there somewhere I can store my belongings?
Jericho Beach Kayaking has a limited number of unsecured cubbies available where you are welcome to leave items you do not want to take on the water with you. They are not able to hold on to your valuables. We recommend you leave them at home or in the car. Alternatively, you can bring a drybag with you so you can take them on the water. We also have drybags available for rent and for purchase on site.
What if it’s forecasted to rain?
We will be out on the water, rain or shine! We will only resort to cancelling if it is too windy or if there are other safety concerns. You will be notified in advance and refunded if we cancel due to weather.
Do I need to be available for all of the Complete Series sessions?
In order to receive the certification for this course, you must be present and complete the sessions up to standard.
What will I learn in the Complete series?
We will spend five evenings at Jericho Beach learning the fundamentals of gear, kayaks, and strokes. We’ll introduce kayak capsizing and re-entry, both on your own and with the help of a partner, and show you how to paddle more efficiently. We’ll also introduce navigation for day-tripping, including chart reading, route finding, tides, and weather.
The program will wrap up with a full-day trip from Jericho Beach
